Accountant, or Qualified Accountant, or Professional Accountant, is a certified accountancy and financial expert in the auspices of most countries. Such as other industries including medical doctors and solicitors, different areas have their own training and examination systems to maintain the quality and promote qualified accountants in their jurisdictions.

Accountants first and foremost worked only within practice, selling advice and accounting services to other individuals and enterprises, but today, in addition, lots work within private companies, the financial industry and many government bodies.

Accountancy or accounting is the collation, expression or provision of assurance about information of a financial nature that helps owners, managers, investors, tax authorities and other decision makers make decisions.

Those who practice accountancy are known as Accountants. There are several professional institutes for accountants throughout the world, some of them are legally recognized in their jurisdictions. Such as British qualified accountants which includes Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA or FCCA) and Chartered Accountant (CA, ACA or FCA), the Canadian qualified accountants e.g. Chartered Accountants, Certified General Accountants and Registered Public Accountants (CA, CGA or RPA) and also American qualified accountants such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

The Certified Management Accountant popular in industry (CMA) designation is unusual in the United States in that it does not have a statutory basis. However it is accepted by industry and by its peer associations. In Canada the Canadian CMA desingation is recognised under provincial/territorial legislation providing assurance of quality.
